SEO is not an easy task to be achieved as it seems to be. It might be a short term while you hear it but it has many other subsets that you need to get familiar with before you really get into countering how hard it can be to achieve.

In this blog, I will be taking you through some of the important terms that you need to cover if you are willing to start your career in the field of SEO. This two-part blog contains all the terms of SEO that ranges from on-page to off-page and even technical SEO.

Alt Attribute

Alt attribute or alt tag is an HTML tag that describes what your image is about. Since web crawlers cannot understand the images by themselves, they read these tags to understand the images while optimizing it to play a crucial role in the ranking factor.

Above the fold

Above the fold is something that you see in the first hand when you land on the website. It is the space in your website that captures and holds your visitors' attention before they start scrolling down to your website. It could be anything from images to texts, etc. that catches the eyes of the visitors while keeping them engaged. But remember to not clutter this section with ads as this might affect your ranking factor.

Black Hat SEO is a toxic way you follow to rank up your position in SERPs. This technique follows the unethical ways to improve your SEO that are against the guidelines of search engines. This technique really helps you achieve success in the short term but it will definitely leave you with a negative impact or even a possibility to get your website banned from SERPs.

Bounce Rate

It is an average ratio of visitors that choose to leave your website immediately once they land on your website without getting engaged with all pages of the website. It’s really important to determine how long your visitors stay and interact with your website that acts as a ranking factor for SERPs. When the bounce rate is higher,  search engines predict that your page is not relevant to the user intent. That’s when your page starts getting a negative impact hampering your position in SERPs.

Broken Links

Broken links are links that don't land your visitors to their desired page instead they land into pages with a message that says 404 error or the web page doesn’t exist. It’s a crucial element that needs to be optimized if you don’t want to have a negative effect on your website. 

Canonical URL

Canonical URLs are a type of URL that defines your page content as an authorized page that is owned by you when there are several multiple pages that have similar or duplicate content.

Click-Through-Rate (CTR)

CTR is the total ratio of people who click on your ads despite the number of times it is seen. It is a metric that determines the total percentage of people that click on your link as it pops on your SERPs.

Cloaking 

It is a process that shows two different content or URLs to visitors and web crawlers respectively. It is an unethical way of SEO that violates the guidelines of search engines.

Conversion Rate

It is the total percentage of visitors that take their final decision and performs an action i.e. consuming your products and services. 

Crawl Budget

Crawl Budget refers to deciding the total number of pages that need to be crawled and indexed over a certain period of time.

Do-follow

It is an attribute in SEO that requests the web crawlers to follow the link and pass the link juice and reputation across the page.

Domain Authority

Domain Authority is a metric of SEO that allows web crawlers to predict that your web page is capable enough to rank high in SERPs.

Duplicate Content

Duplicate content refers to content and pages that are similar and matches to other pages within your own website or any other website.

Dwell Time

It is the total amount of time that your visitors spend on your website before they return back to SERPs.

External Link

External links or outbound links are links that your website points to someone else’s website.

Featured Snippet 

Featured snippets are snippets or features that you see in SERPs on top of organic results that try to respond to the user intent in the most engaging way.

Google Analytics

It is a tool that allows you to analyze and track the health and performance of your website as well as other components like user behaviour, total number of traffic you gain or lose over time, bounce rate, etc.

Google Search Console 

It is yet another tool that allows you to figure out if your website is performing well or not while helping you identify and fix any issues that reside on your website.

Google Trends

Google Trends is a tool that offers you a visualization of search terms and topics that are trending and popular among users and within the industry.

Gray Hat

It is a combination of two techniques of SEO i.e. White Hat & Black Hat. This technique both follows and violates the guidelines of search engines.

Guest Blogging

It is one of the tactics of the link building process that allows you to post your content or article on someone else's website but earn a backlink in return.
